Flahavan’s are delighted to be awarded best Green Supplier/Most Eco Friendly Supplier at the 2014 Checkout National FMCG Awards. The event which took place at the Four Seasons Hotel in Dublin, awarded the accolade to Flahavan’s which acknowledges strong eco credentials, not just in terms of product formulation, but also in areas like strategic environmental thinking.
The company has been milling oats for 7 generations at the family mill in Kilmacthomas, Co. Waterford for over 200 years and have put their commitment behind sustainabilty into practise in a number of ways including combining old technologies with new, for example using the the original millstream alongside the mill on the river Mahon which generates 10% of electricity requirements to assist with powering the mill. Flahavan’s also use the husk (by-product) of the oats to support an environmentally-friendly manufacturing processes by burning it to power the boiler, which in turn generates steam for the cooking process. 
In terms of waste Flahavan’s have reduced their overall  waste by 60% and reduced waste going to landfill by a remarkable 87% and in terms of food miles, conventional oats are all sourced from farmers within a 50 mile radius of the mill in Kilmacthomas, Co. Waterford. Sustainable packaging is also key with Flahavan's committed to protecting the environment by funding the recovery and recycling of packaging waste through Repak.
Flahavan’s is also the No. 1 selling Organic Porridge in the UK which in itself increases demand to source this farmed product in a more environmentally friendly way.
Accepting the Award on behalf of the company James Flahavan said “We are very proud of our credentials in sustainability, we work hard to do as much as we can to support our business in a sustainable way and are constantly looking at new ways to improve further on this. Today’s award gives us further motivation to continue to do this and acknowleges the incredible work of all those employed by Flahavan’s as well as our suppliers”.
